YOUR ART IS IN DANGER (HIGHLY IMPORTANT)

Journal Entry: Sat Apr 12, 2008, 9:47 AM
  • Mood: Rage
  • Reading: The Bible
  • Watching: The US Government screw the small folks over.
I'll save the "hello" for later. You guys know I'm not normally steamed up about something, but I'm pretty pissed off by what I've just found out.

Everyone here needs to sit down and read this if you haven't already. This applys to the US and Europe, as for as I know.

Orphan Works information

Some a**hats in Congress are trying to come up with some bullcrap act called Orphaned Work, where basically it legalizes theft of OUR art. Not just here on deviantART, but ANYWHERE. We'll have to start paying for protection of our own creation.

Guh, I don't have time to go into details, but you guys have to read this. It's HIGHLY important.

By the way, F*** YOU, CONGRESS! You're not getting a single picture out of me!

Sorry guys, but if this passes, you won't see me here again. I can't risk having over 5 years of work go down the drain now.

This is not the first time stuff like this has been attempted. In fact, on a US government level, it would be the FOURTH attempt. Making laws that require copyrights to be registered effectively eliminates a person from being able to claim something as their own since it costs money to register a copyright.

Also, the legality behind "orphaned works" is similar to that of abandonware. Copyrights last many decades, and if you use something that belongs to someone else, orphaned or not, they have the full capacity to sue your ass over it.

I really highly doubt that they'd go through with this. Honestly, there are millions of art companies out there that would not allow this. My thoughts are that this is just a hoax.

Plus deviantART protects your stuff and if this law were to be passed, it would be stopped right away.

Don't worry about it. Read my current journal. ^^; I had to correct myself...

Basically, it's talking about unsigned works... orphaned works are unsigned works. Either way, it's not gonna pass.... it can't. XD

I've always pictured in heaven... there's a huge memory bank.
Where you could go back to those memories and live them all over again, even the lost ones.
Like... the characters people draw. Like a photo book... except real.
